Buzdeo.com, a new video sharing website has been launched to provide a safe and
secure environment for the sharing and streaming of videos by individuals, families
or businesses. The web site has been built on the outcome of research that Buzdeo
undertook that concluded that many individuals do not put personal videos on mainstream
video sharing sites for fear of losing control over their posted content, people
interviewed for the research also said that they would prefer to pay a small monthly
amount to have privacy and retain ownership of what they saw as ‘their’ memories
and content.
Cathy Connolly, Buzdeo’s CEO, who previously worked at the London Bank Coutts &
Co before working as a full time mother said “Providing
an alternative solution to very public sites like You tube, or Google Videos, was
really what has driven us to build Buzdeo. I have 3 young children and wanted to
share video of them with friends and relatives, but I was really uncomfortable with
using the big name sites, because I would end up assigning all of my rights over
the content away”.
Buzdeo’s owners believe that they can compete with the larger video sharing sites
because they have a clear market difference and niche. They have not looked to obtain
revenues through advertising but have built their concept around small monthly subscription
charges, which they believe people are prepared to pay in return for retaining full
control over their videos, no loss or assignment of rights, and not having their
videos surrounded by adverts. Ruth Chambers Buzdeo’s Marketing Director is very
confident in Buzdeo becoming a Global player in the web video sharing market, “although
we are small, we have the advantage that we have low overheads and no external investors
to payback, we are looking to build brand awareness, through a mix of conventional
marketing and viral approaches, it does seem that we are offering something quite
different”. Buzdeo also thinks that their approach will avoid any potential copyright
issues that public web sharing sites have, since their model is very much for consumer
made video, privately shared.
Buzdeo has been built using the latest technologies to enable a highly scalable
global architecture. The system has been built around a similar technical paradigm
that Google has used to great effect, that is, using inexpensive equipment in clusters
to enable scale, load balancing and fail safety. Philip Connolly, Buzdeo’s Chief
Technology Officer, who previously worked for a London Based Hedge Fund, has been
responsible for the design and build of the infrastructure and the web site. His
approach has been to ensure that the site can withstand rapid growth. He says “although
it would be fantastic to grow rapidly, our growth plans are conservative, however
if we need to we can add additional kit into our data centres very quickly and scale
to mammoth proportions, the software has been built to automatically pick up new
hardware and add them into the Buzdeo domain”. Connolly
also says “Buzdeo uses Flash over windows media player or real player simply because
it has become the de facto standard for streaming videos, we did some substantial
research before we committed ourselves, because, this type of technology can be
very one way”.
